True Heart

For the most part I actually do get to see the brighter side of humans, but every now and then, unfortunately, my eyes will witness the darker side of some of those around me. When I was writing the first draft of ’29 Dimes’ a few years ago I was simultaneously going through a rough emotional period in my private life whereby I had to make a major decision of whether to keep a so-called friend in my life or not. (She gave me reasons to question her true heart.) So, as I was writing ‘Vehicles’, an original song for the character ‘Teki’ in ’29 Dimes’, the lyrics just poured out of me. ‘Vehicles’ is a song about people who pretends to love and care about you only to get what they want.
Yep, we must be mindful of those we have and keep in our circle. My life changed for the better once I’d cut the ties with this so-called friend. I hope that your life is filled with goodhearted people who show you daily that they want nothing but betterment and happiness for you. It’s a wonderful feeling when you’re surrounded by people who enjoys it when you rise. And you also get a kick out of seeing them rise up as well.
Here’s the lyrics to ‘Vehicles’…
‘VEHICLES’
You pick me up…take me around
You use me up when you’re feelin’ down
Just like vehicles goin’ around and around
Just like vehicles in my town
You only need me when you’re down
Next time when you’re passin’ by
I’ll remember you…and the smile and the lie
‘Cause you’re just another vehicle goin’ by and by
Yeah, just another vehicle goin’ by and by
You hold me… You kiss me
You give me a ride
Maybe some day…maybe some way
We may collide.

My First Love

Writers usually live somewhat boring lives so I'm always puzzled when readers are interested in my private life. Recently, I'd received a few letters asking me if there was anyone special in my life. I've never been one to kiss n' tell but I will spill the beans about my very first love. Ready? Here we go...Well, I was 12 years old and I was watching 'Butterfield 8' at a cousin's house. When I first saw 'Gloria Wandrous' (played by Elizabeth Taylor) something strange happened to me. At that time I didn't know what hormones were but now I know that I certainly had some because my body was doing things it never done before. Yep, it's true, that day (at age 12) I fell in love...and get this, still today (at age 55) I still get all gooey inside whenever I see Liz on screen. - Randolph Randy Camp

PS: Just in case if anyone is interested, my all-time favorite movies are 'Imitation of Life', 'To Kill A Mockingbird', 'A Patch of Blue', 'Billy Jack', and 'Butterfield 8'

WHY YOU WAS BORN

WHY YOU WAS BORN...
As I'm about to pack up and head back home, I can't seem to get this 17 year old girl out of my mind who'd approached me at the book signing earlier today. She had dyed her hair with yellow and purple streaks similar to 'Teki', one of my characters in my latest novel, and she walked up to me slowly with an acoustic guitar strapped around her shoulders.
Unlike the others in line, this young lady didn't have one of my books in her hand for me to sign, instead she politely asked, "Mr. Camp, can I sing you a song?" I nodded 'sure' and she started strumming her six-string. She blew me away as she sung "Vehicles", a song I'd written for 'Teki', which was featured in the novel '29 Dimes'.
A small crowd had gathered around her as she filled the air with her beautiful voice and played the guitar. Needless to say, it was a special moment. After she'd finished the song, we had a moment to chat, and that's when she told me that she never knew what she wanted to do with her life until about a year ago when she read '29 Dimes' and started identifying with the character 'Teki'. She went on to tell me that she now is destined to write and hopefully record her own songs.
I told her that she has a God-given talent, and then I reminded her of the old adage, "There are two important dates in your life, the day you was born and the day you discover why you was born." - Randolph Randy Camp

‘America: No Purchase Necessary’ is a feel-good story about acceptance. One of the many perks of winning the national ‘America’s Family’ Sweepstakes is the chance to meet and make appearances with the President on his reelection campaign. When an eclectic African-American family becomes the unexpected winner of the prestigious ‘America’s Family’ contest, the President and his shiesty reelection campaign manager tries to get the family disqualified, thinking that this particular family isn’t ‘American-looking’ enough, and to appear with them on the campaign trail will hurt the President’s chance of getting reelected. Without being preachy, ‘America: No Purchase Necessary’ gives a lighthearted glimpse into American politics while simultaneously showing a realistic snapshot of life in contemporary America. Just like any other family in America, the Lanterns have autism, transgender issues, and even a grandmother who’ve come up with her own interesting alternative to plant-based burgers. ‘America: No Purchase Necessary’ is an entertaining political satire that looks at race relations in America, and it shows the sometimes-ugly side of America while simultaneously reflecting the goodness in certain people that highlights America’s beauty as well. If you or your family ever felt left out, pushed out or shut out then Randolph Randy Camp’s ‘America: No Purchase Necessary’ is a story for you.

No Higher Compliment

Author Tops Off Black History Month at East

The students from Mr. Wagner's Certified Nursing Assistant class paid homage to Buffalo's author, Randy Camp on Thursday, February 26, 2015. Mr. Camp was treated to two skits by the students that represented scenes from the two novels that the students recently read in class. The students also awarded Mr. Camp their Annual Distinguish Helper Award for his direct influence on their lives.
The first book the students read was "Wet Matches", a novel that metaphorically deals with the emotional impact that segregation of schools had on Mr. Camp growing up in the South. This novel is packed with empathy as race is superimposed on the journey of five lost teens who are coping with self-identity confusion, and their medical diagnoses of HIV. The second novel the students read, Mr. Camp's most recent work;"29 Dimes: A Love Story", is a very engaging story of a group of close teens, and their last summer before high school graduation. The story deeply explores teenage relationship issues with excellent characters development.
The C.N.A students easily related to the multiple issues that were addressed in this swiftly moving love story where the hero is a special needs high school boy who overcomes multiple obstacles to become the star of the story by giving his life for another. The students spent 20 minutes of each class period reading out loud and then were engaged in  daily writing assignments that dealt with the topic that was addressed in the book for that day. Mr. Camp's response to the event was "...there's no higher compliment for a writer than to see his characters come to life."

After the skits, Mr. Camp led the students in a round table discussion about not only the story, but the process, frustration, and challenges involved in publishing his books.

Creating Teki

I love it when people have the courage to just be themselves, regardless of outside pressure from others or society in general. When I created the character of 'Teki' in my novel '29 Dimes', I wanted her to represent everyone who strives to be themselves no matter what.
Teki is a free-spirited, young Chinese girl from a very wealthy family, who is sent to a prestigious music academy for gifted musical prodigies and is later kicked out for playing a cool reggae rhythm during her first classical Beethoven piano recital. A few years later, as a teenager, Teki has dyed her hair and fronts an all-girl progressive reggae band in Silver Lake, California. - Randy Camp

In Randolph Randy Camp's latest novel '29 DIMES', an eclectic group of Los Angeles high school students will have experiences during their summer break that will change their young lives forever. Teki is one of the students and she dreams of becoming a pop star. The song 'VEHICLES' is sung by Teki within the novel.

Book Talk - Classroom Discussion: 29 Dimes

As requested from several teachers, here's a partial list of suggested reading comprehension discussion topics for those of you who've received early advanced educational copies of '29 Dimes: A Love Story' for your classroom. After your class have read the entire novel, ask the students the following questions:

1. How did the author use the city of Los Angeles and the communities of Silver Lake and Echo Park as characters in the story?
2. Regarding the novel's descriptive blurb on the back cover, what do you think is meant by the phrase "...love can happen to the most unlikely people..."? Did the author want the reader to consider the characters Tip or Ronnie as "unlikely" to find love, or someone else perhaps?
3. Regarding the novel's brief descriptive blurb on the back cover, what do you think is meant by the phrase "... love can be found in the most unusual place..."? (Hint: Have your students take a closer look at Tip's childhood and his early attachment to shapes and colors, in which he'd observed in the carpet's unique pattern.) Remind your students not to go for the easiest or more obvious answers, and to dig a little deeper when trying to find the meaning of symbols and metaphors within the story.

4. When the character Teki wrote the lyrics to the song 'Vehicles', who do you think she was thinking about when she wrote it? (Hint: Was she thinking about her brother Vince, her classmate Kalib, or someone else?)
5. Why do you think the author gave Ronnie's parents the last name 'Abelson'?
6. What are other symbols and metaphors the author used in the story?
Note: '29 Dimes: A Love Story' will be released and available to the general public in early November 2013. Look for it online on Amazon.

One Hot Silver Lake Summer

One summer. Seven hearts. 29 Dimes. Randolph Randy Camp's '29 Dimes: A Love Story' is a provocative, coming-of-age tale that follows Teki, Brittany, Tip, Ronnie, Pepe, Kalib, and Valerie through their summer break in the Los Angeles community of Silver Lake where each of them will have an experience that will shape and change their young lives forever. Pepe's mouth has always gotten him into trouble. A talented street poet, will Pepe's "in your face" anthem 'Hear My Echo!' get him into trouble at this summer's Silver Lake street festival? Teki will be the first to admit that she's certainly not your typical Chinese girl. A gifted musical prodigy, Teki once got kicked out of a prestigious music academy for rocking a reggae rhythm instead of the required Beethoven tune at her classical piano recital. Now, at seventeen, Teki fronts an all-girl progressive reggae band in Silver Lake. Kalib is a young Armenian computer whiz who is hoping to win Valerie's heart this summer (but so is every other guy in Silver Lake). Carrying the agonizing weight of his family's dark past on his shoulders, Kalib believes that Valerie's love could wash away all of that pain, if only he could somehow convince her to go out with him. If you still believe that love can happen to the most unlikely people and that love still can be found in the most unusual place then '29 Dimes' is the story for you. One hot, crazy summer. Seven hungry hearts. 29 Dimes.

'29 Dimes: A Love Story' takes place in the community of Silver Lake, California. It's a love story amid a wild, crazy explosive summer which follows seven eclectic characters. Kalib is a young Armenian computer geek who is totally head-over-heels in love with Valerie, a beautiful angel who has all of the guys in Silver Lake fighting for her attention. Teki is a Chinese music prodigy who now fronts an all-girl reggae band in Silver Lake. Pepe's mouth has always gotten him into trouble. Will Pepe's anthem "HEAR MY ECHO!" get him into trouble this summer at Silver Lake's spoken word competition? Other colorful characters include Ronnie, Tip, Brittany, and Miss Kelley.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR

I am aware that the Silver Lake Sunset Junction Street Fair has been discontinued due to permit fee issues, but I hope that readers of this book will rejuvenate and spark a renewed interest and make concrete efforts to bring back the street fair not only in Silver Lake, but in other communities as well.
Also, my heart goes out to the Armenian people, especially to those Armenian families who have suffered and sacrificed gravely at the cruel hands of the Turks during the 1915 – 1923 Armenian Genocide period.
Lastly, when I ran in the Los Angeles Marathons (two years in a row) and noticed the eclectic, diverse neighborhoods along the 26-mile marathon route, I knew then that one day I would have to write a story with the city itself as a central character. So, finally, here it is…’29 Dimes : A Love Story’.     – Randolph Randy Camp

Randy Camp's Thriller '...Then The Rain'

Sample Chapter

Then The Rain' is an entertaining, contemporary rock n' roll thriller with heart. Sometimes a song is more than just a song. In a small town, sometimes the town preacher can become invincible. In Shallow Creek, Pastor Wright went too far. What Pastor Wright did to the kids of Shallow Creek was unspeakable. What Pastor Wright did to his own daughter was unforgivable. To young Samantha her favorite song becomes her savior, and her favorite singer, Viki Powers, becomes her hero. The lyrics from Viki's songs really connect and inspire teenagers all across the country, especially those teens experiencing personal hardships. In Shallow Creek, if you wasn't following the 'Wright Way' you may possibly pay a heavy price for your sins. In one particular case, their screams echoed through the woods that night. '...Then The Rain' is the ultimate contemporary good vs. evil thriller! Viki Powers came from nothing. Viki has seen both sides of the coin. She definitely identifies with her fans, and she will do anything for them. After receiving a desperate SOS email from a devoted fan in trouble, Viki immediately went into action! What Viki did for Sam was remarkable. '...THEN THE RAIN' is an exciting rock n' roll thriller with heart. This is prize-winning Author Randolph Randy Camp's second novel. It tells the entertaining tale of a female rock star battling a sadistic preacher to save a captive fan. To young Samantha, one of Viki's songs was definitely more than just a song...it became her saving grace...her sanctuary.

Cammie's Grief: Excerpt from LaBrea's Moon

Excerpt from 'LaBrea's Moon'....
The door is partially open. The curtains are drawn. The room is dimly lit. A certain gloom...emptiness lingers in the room. LaBrea's suicide is taking a devastating toll on her mother. Everyday Cammie goes into LaBrea's bedroom and secretly releases her pain. Today we find Cammie sitting on the edge of LaBrea's bed. Tears streak down her cheeks as she gazes at the collection of movie posters covering the walls. Each poster has an enlarged image of the movie's lead actress surrounded by smaller images of the other cast. Deep in her heart, Cammie knew that one day she would see her daughter's face gracing some big blockbuster movie poster just like the ones ornamenting these walls. The death of that wishful thought, the loss of that hopeful dream is slowly killing Cammie, day by day. Cammie wipes the streaks of tears from her cheeks with the backside of the colorful apron wrapped around her hips. Suddenly, a kitchen timer echoes throughout the house! Cammie doesn't move a muscle. Momentarily, she seems to be caught up in the midst of a daydream.

Every Town Has A Drunk Named Willy

Excerpt from the Southern noir "LaBrea's Moon"...
Snake-tongue Lenny schools LaBrea in a nasty condescending tone, "Every town gotta drunk named Willy and every town gotta few dreamers too. Some people 'round here like you and ya' lit'l boyfriend Ty always be talkin' about leavin' this place but it's just talk though. Y'all stuck here right along with the rest of us...gonna die here too. Hell, the only thing I ever seen that make it outta this town is that damn water in the Chattahoochee."

Wet Matches: A Novel" is an inspiring and uplifting story about five homeless 'throwaway' teens (all HIV positive) getting a second chance at a better life when a young couple on a high school reunion trip rescues them and takes them on a cross-country journey to their new home in sunny California. 'Wet Matches' is about friendships, and it asks the question, "How far would you go for a friend?" Fifteen years of separation didn't stop Crystal from being there for Jalan. What Crystal did for Jalan will inspire us all to take a closer look at our own relationships and friendships...Could you still laugh knowing that death was possibly lurking around the corner? Meet five free-spirited teens: Shelly, Robbie, Josie, Micky and Cole, who will inspire you to enjoy every second of your life. Shelly is pregnant. Robbie plays guitar. Josie's a little confused. Micky likes cars. Cole's a little shy. Some people called them useless. They were told to get out of town. Some people said that they were about as good as wet matches...but Jalan, Crystal and Jack thought otherwise. If you had ever been ridiculed, bullied, mocked...or if someone had ever made you feel like you was good for nothing or worthless then Randolph Randy Camp's award-winning 'Wet Matches: A Novel' is a story for you. Without being preachy-but yet-entertaining, 'Wet Matches' takes a fresh contemporary look at America's ever-increasing youth runaway and teen homeless problems. 'WET MATCHES' is a Quarter-Finals Winner of The Writers Network 14th Annual Screenplay and Fiction Competition.
