Of all the life lessons and love lessons I’ve experienced over the years there’s one that truly stands out. I originally wrote about it awhile back in a post entitled ‘My Spotsylvania Nights’. It was the late 70’s and I was 17 years old, hastily diving into manhood. This particular September night would change my life forever, as it gave me a glimpse of the real world and helped to shape my current views about women and dating. Here’s the original post:
As in countless towns throughout America, Friday night high school games in Spotsylvania County was the place to be, especially when the Spotsylvania Knights was playing their greatest rivalry, the James Monroe Yellow Jackets, from Fredericksburg, Virginia. During these Friday night games, many of us had our first experiences with the opposite sex and got a bitter taste of reality as we tried to shed our juvenile skin.
During my senior year at Spotsylvania High, I would leave school and sometimes go directly to work at the Howard Johnson’s Restaurant in Fredericksburg. While working as a busboy and dishwasher, I’d worked up enough nerve to ask a fairly new waitress out for a date. The first time I saw her I wanted to be with her. During our lunch breaks we would chat and laugh about our high school lives. We made a date to meet up Friday night at the Snack Shack just before the big game between the James Monroe Yellow Jackets and the Spotsylvania Knights.
I arrived early at the Snack Shack nervous as hell but looking sharp. This was going to be a big night for me because I truly thought that one of my mannish dreams would be realized. As this particular night unfolded however, I slowly became aware that our hopes and dreams come in many shapes and sizes and that we have to prepare ourselves for the different angles in which things present themselves to us. What I’d initially viewed as an awful experience actually was my most valuable lesson.
After waiting for twenty minutes for my date to arrive, the lady behind the Snack Shack service window gave me a look of concern. I instantly looked away, pretending not to notice her look because I was too embarrassed that my date hadn’t showed up yet. The Snack Shack was quiet briefly because the football game a short distance away had started already. From a distance, we could see the bright stadium lights illuminating the dark Spotsylvania sky and we could faintly hear the stadium cheers of the fans. The lady at the counter knew that I was hurting and instinctively knew why I was hurting. She motioned me towards the service window and kindly said, ” You want to eat some fries with me? It’s my break and it’s on the house.” Shame-faced, I shook my head ‘no’ and slowly stepped away.
About fifteen minutes later my date still hadn’t arrived. Once again, the lady behind the counter approached the service window with a large order of fries in her hand. She tapped on the window to get my attention. She could easily read the obvious frustration and embarrassment on my face as I repeatedly sighed at the side patio table. She motioned me to come to the window. This time I accepted her offer as she tried her best to cheer me up with stories of her school days and all of the boys who’d stood her up.
When it comes to dating, still today, some 39 years later, without even realizing it sometimes, I will make my judgments and opinions about potential women in my life not based upon the young lady who’d stood me up, but instead, based upon the beautiful qualities of that wonderful warmhearted lady at the Snack Shack that cool September night.
I’m approaching 56 now, and after all these years, I still think about that kind-hearted lady at the Snack Shack and all the changes I went through during my young Spotsylvania nights. Happy Valentine’s Day, Everyone! – Randolph Randy Camp

True Heart
For the most part I actually do get to see the brighter side of humans, but every now and then, unfortunately, my eyes will witness the darker side of some of those around me. When I was writing the first draft of ’29 Dimes’ a few years ago I was simultaneously going through a rough emotional period in my private life whereby I had to make a major decision of whether to keep a so-called friend in my life or not. (She gave me reasons to question her true heart.) So, as I was writing ‘Vehicles’, an original song for the character ‘Teki’ in ’29 Dimes’, the lyrics just poured out of me. ‘Vehicles’ is a song about people who pretends to love and care about you only to get what they want.
Yep, we must be mindful of those we have and keep in our circle. My life changed for the better once I’d cut the ties with this so-called friend. I hope that your life is filled with goodhearted people who show you daily that they want nothing but betterment and happiness for you. It’s a wonderful feeling when you’re surrounded by people who enjoys it when you rise. And you also get a kick out of seeing them rise up as well.
Here’s the lyrics to ‘Vehicles’…
‘VEHICLES’
You pick me up…take me around
You use me up when you’re feelin’ down
Just like vehicles goin’ around and around
Just like vehicles in my town
You only need me when you’re down
Next time when you’re passin’ by
I’ll remember you…and the smile and the lie
‘Cause you’re just another vehicle goin’ by and by
Yeah, just another vehicle goin’ by and by
You hold me… You kiss me
You give me a ride
Maybe some day…maybe some way
We may collide.

Page To Stage: 29 Dimes
The students did a great job in portraying the characters from two of my novels, ‘Wet Matches’ and ’29 Dimes’, as they acted out several key scenes from the two stories. When I first arrived at the school, I was expecting the typical Book Talk discussion which would normally take place in a large classroom, but an escort greeted me at the school entrance and informed me that we would be going straight to the auditorium first. And when I saw the colorful stage filled with the kids dressed in character and the set decorations, I was totally caught off guard. It was a wonderful surprise.
And not only was I treated to a fantastic stage performance by the students, I was also honored and presented with a nice ‘Thank You’ plaque and an elegant dime-bracelet, which was a replica of the bracelet that’s a crucial part of the plot in the ’29 Dimes’ love story.
There’s no greater compliment to a writer than seeing others take his or her characters and bring them to life. The students at East High School definitely made me feel ten feet tall on Thursday, but the true beauty of the whole event was seeing those energetic students express themselves and show off their natural talents in acting, singing, sound effects and in set design. – Randolph Randy Camp

In Randolph Randy Camp's latest novel '29 DIMES', an eclectic group of Los Angeles high school students will have experiences during their summer break that will change their young lives forever. Teki is one of the students and she dreams of becoming a pop star. The song 'VEHICLES' is sung by Teki within the novel.

Hear My Echo!
'HEAR MY ECHO!'
Yeah I’m mad an’ I’m way too young
I don’t like standing in Florida — facing a courthouse gun
Peep into my world and you twirl n’ swirl
Can’t handle what yo’ eyes might see
Ain’t no f#*%# way you wanna be me
Walkin’ in my shoes
Be ready to pay some dues
Yeah hear my echo!
I wanna scream!
Why is this f#*+#* world so got damn mean?
I don’t like this sh*# happening all around me
Motherf*#*+#* killin’ people an’ gettin’ off scott free!
They’re making me angry and angry and angrier!
Go ahead ‘cause I’m just gonna get louder and louder!
They try to tell me what to say and teach me what they know
I’m tired of their sh#* and tired of their pony show
Com’on now Silver Lake!…Hear my echo!
'Hear My Echo!' was written by Randolph Randy Camp specifically for the character 'Pepe' in the novel '29 Dimes: A Love Story'
THE FOLLOWING IS THE AUTHOR'S DEFENSE TO A FEW READERS' REACTION TO '29 DIMES':
December 2, 2013
“My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.” Ernest Hemingway wrote those words years ago, and as a writer, I can’t think of a better way to defend myself than with Hemingway’s words. I’ll try to explain.
I understand that some folks around the country have called my latest book ’29 Dimes’ inciteful because I have a hot-mouth character named ‘Pepe’ speaking his mind about Florida’s schizophrenic ‘stand your ground’ law in certain parts of the novel. From my understanding, what’s getting some folks especially riled up is when Pepe performs his provocative, ‘in your face’ spoken-word anthem ‘Hear My Echo’ towards the end of the story. The specific line from that anthem that has got some people bent out of shape goes like this, “…I don’t like standing in Florida – facing a courthouse gun…” Depending on where you stand on the different sides of the ‘stand your ground’ debate, you may possibly see those lyrics as “inciteful”, but I specifically wrote those words for the voice and the mentality of a specific fictional character. It would be an injustice to myself as a writer, and certainly a literary injustice to the fire-tongued character I’d created if I had him voice his opinion and thoughts on other safe and soft topics currently headlining America’s newspapers and not a hot topic such as Florida’s ‘stand your ground’ law. I wouldn’t be true to myself as a writer, nor to my story if I did that.
The ‘stand your ground’ law in Florida and several other states is very schizophrenic because lawmakers and law enforcement officials are picking and choosing when and when not to use and invoke the law, seemingly using it when it’s convenient for them at that particular time and place. For example, take the case of the Florida woman Marissa Alexander who initially was sentenced to 20 years for firing a warning shot at her intruding husband, and when she tried to use Florida’s ‘stand your ground’ law as her defense the judge simply threw it out, saying that she could’ve ran out of the house. But, on the other hand, look at what happened in the other high-profile Florida trial where a vigilante got away with murder, thanks to the convenience of the wishy-washy ‘stand your ground’ defense. The reason I wrote and used the words “…courthouse gun…” in the ‘Hear My Echo’ lyrics was to express mostly my character’s belief, and to be quite honest, some of my own as well, that Florida’s ‘stand your ground’ law is seemingly sanctioned by the state, giving everyday Jane and Joe permission to kill without consequences. When the ‘not guilty’ verdict went viral in the George Zimmerman trial it instantly triggered my memory bank to a time in America when old cranky men draped in white sheets with cone-shape heads would hang a man of a darker shade up in a tree for all of the local town people to see, knowing that there would be no repercussions whatsoever, and everyone nonchalantly walks away as if this was accepted as normal everyday life.
I never intended my novel to be “inciteful”, but I do want it to open discussions in classrooms, at the kitchen table, and around the water cooler. I truly believe that if America is ever going to have better race relations among our very diverse and ever-growing population then we simply must start with a peaceful conversation first.

More Book Talk Tips on 29 Dimes
Here's a list of additional questions for teachers to initiate discussion among their students after reading the coming-of-age novel '29 Dimes: A Love Story' (You should also reference the previous article on '29 Dimes' discussion topics dated October 23, 2013):
1. Do you think that Kalib would've done what he did at the end of the story if his father was still present in his life?
2. In Pepe's 'in your face' anthem 'Hear My Echo!' what do you think he meant by "...courthouse gun..."?
3. Do you think that Pepe was in love with Miss Kelley, or was he simply infatuated with her?
4. Why was it important for the author to let the reader "hear" the characters' own voices in the story?
5. What did the programming staff at the TV station learn from Brittany during her summer internship?

Book Talk - Classroom Discussion: 29 Dimes
As requested from several teachers, here's a partial list of suggested reading comprehension discussion topics for those of you who've received early advanced educational copies of '29 Dimes: A Love Story' for your classroom. After your class have read the entire novel, ask the students the following questions:
1. How did the author use the city of Los Angeles and the communities of Silver Lake and Echo Park as characters in the story?
2. Regarding the novel's descriptive blurb on the back cover, what do you think is meant by the phrase "...love can happen to the most unlikely people..."? Did the author want the reader to consider the characters Tip or Ronnie as "unlikely" to find love, or someone else perhaps?
3. Regarding the novel's brief descriptive blurb on the back cover, what do you think is meant by the phrase "... love can be found in the most unusual place..."? (Hint: Have your students take a closer look at Tip's childhood and his early attachment to shapes and colors, in which he'd observed in the carpet's unique pattern.) Remind your students not to go for the easiest or more obvious answers, and to dig a little deeper when trying to find the meaning of symbols and metaphors within the story.
4. When the character Teki wrote the lyrics to the song 'Vehicles', who do you think she was thinking about when she wrote it? (Hint: Was she thinking about her brother Vince, her classmate Kalib, or someone else?)
5. Why do you think the author gave Ronnie's parents the last name 'Abelson'?
6. What are other symbols and metaphors the author used in the story?
Note: '29 Dimes: A Love Story' will be released and available to the general public in early November 2013. Look for it online on Amazon.

Kalib is a character in the novel '29 Dimes'. Kalib is a young Armenian computer whiz with a lot on his shoulders. He has a hard time dealing with the tragedy of his family's past due to the Turks' Armenian Genocide. Here's bits n' pieces of an excerpt from '29 Dimes' as Kalib unleashes his anger, "How can they expect us just to forget it like it never happened? Dad used to tell me about how my great grandfather was killed for no reason by the Turks. For no f*#king reason! ...I don't care anymore! I tried so hard! It's like the more I keep tryin' to be here the more people keep treating me like I don't belong here!"

This provocative coming-of-age novel follows seven eclectic characters during their summer break, with each one having an experience that will shape and change their young lives forever. Randolph Randy Camp's '29 Dimes: A Love Story' is a provocative, coming-of-age tale that follows Teki, Brittany, Tip, Ronnie, Pepe, Kalib, and Valerie through their summer break in the Los Angeles community of Silver Lake where each of them will have an experience that will shape and change their young lives forever. Pepe's mouth has always gotten him into trouble. A talented street poet, will Pepe's "in your face" anthem 'Hear My Echo!' get him into trouble at this summer's Silver Lake street festival? Teki will be the first to admit that she's certainly not your typical Chinese girl. A gifted musical prodigy, Teki once got kicked out of a prestigious music academy for rocking a reggae rhythm instead of the required Beethoven tune at her classical piano recital. Now, at seventeen, Teki fronts an all-girl progressive reggae band in Silver Lake. Kalib is a young Armenian computer whiz who is hoping to win Valerie's heart this summer (but so is every other guy in Silver Lake). Carrying the agonizing weight of his family's dark past on his shoulders, Kalib believes that Valerie's love could wash away all of that pain, if only he could somehow convince her to go out with him. If you still believe that love can happen to the most unlikely people and that love still can be found in the most unusual place then '29 Dimes' is the story for you. One hot, crazy summer. Seven hungry hearts. 29 Dimes.

'29 Dimes: A Love Story' takes place in the community of Silver Lake, California. It's a love story amid a wild, crazy explosive summer which follows seven eclectic characters. Kalib is a young Armenian computer geek who is totally head-over-heels in love with Valerie, a beautiful angel who has all of the guys in Silver Lake fighting for her attention. Teki is a Chinese music prodigy who now fronts an all-girl reggae band in Silver Lake. Pepe's mouth has always gotten him into trouble. Will Pepe's anthem "HEAR MY ECHO!" get him into trouble this summer at Silver Lake's spoken word competition? Other colorful characters include Ronnie, Tip, Brittany, and Miss Kelley.
A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR
I am aware that the Silver Lake Sunset Junction Street Fair has been discontinued due to permit fee issues, but I hope that readers of this book will rejuvenate and spark a renewed interest and make concrete efforts to bring back the street fair not only in Silver Lake, but in other communities as well.
Also, my heart goes out to the Armenian people, especially to those Armenian families who have suffered and sacrificed gravely at the cruel hands of the Turks during the 1915 – 1923 Armenian Genocide period.
Lastly, when I ran in the Los Angeles Marathons (two years in a row) and noticed the eclectic, diverse neighborhoods along the 26-mile marathon route, I knew then that one day I would have to write a story with the city itself as a central character. So, finally, here it is…’29 Dimes : A Love Story’. – Randolph Randy Camp
One hot, crazy summer. Seven hungry hearts. 29 Dimes. If you still believe that love can happen to the most unlikely people and that love can be found in the most unusual place then '29 Dimes' is a story for you.
