After I bought my first car, a ’72 Pinto, I loved the freedom of going to Fredericksburg whenever I could. Don’t get me wrong, growing up in rural Spotsylvania County in the 70’s had its benefits, but going into town was a big deal back then, especially for this young Virginia country boy. Two of my aunts, Edith Mae and Ruth Edna, had moved into the Hazel Hill Apartments in Fredericksburg, and it was such a treat for me to visit them when I wasn’t in school or was off work, usually on Saturday mornings.
Back then, as a somewhat nerdy schoolboy with big dreams, I was fascinated with getting away for awhile, going to Hazel Hill and then later going to the city park where I would sit alone by the Rappahannock River and write down some of my deepest thoughts. Today, in the middle of April 2017, I still find myself blushing whenever I see my book ‘Wet Matches’, knowing that it had its origin as a simple song lyric way back in 1978 and was conceived on that one particular Hazel Hill morning. – Randolph Randy Camp

Tying the Knots (or not): Randy's Writing Tips
As with any story, it’s common knowledge that you should have a good beginning, middle, and a good ending. Not unless you are intentionally setting up your next sequel with an exciting cliffhanger, it’s always best to answer all questions of your plot so that your readers aren’t left scratching their heads at the end.
But, as already mentioned, if you’re strategically setting up the lead in to your continuation, then it’s best to limit your cliffhanger teaser to only one or two characters. You don’t want to leave your readers puzzled about large chunks of the major plot, but leaving them hungry and guessing about “what happened to so-and-so?” isn’t too hard to digest, and if written with the perfect amount of creative tease, it could get your sequel off to a great financial success. – Randolph Randy Camp

Free Book Saturday
There’s no better feeling than making a difference in someone’s life, especially if their world is somewhat bleak. One of the things that really bothers me is to see a kid who loves to read but there may be obstacles preventing him or her from getting a new book to read. My heart goes out to the young kid who begs his parents, “Can we go to the library so I can check out a new book?”, and the harsh unbelievable response could be something like this, “Why don’t you shut up ’bout some stupid book! Where’s that book at that you got three weeks ago?!”
For all of the kids and book lovers across the globe, I would like to see everyone in the world do something and get involve to make sure that anyone who wants a book is able to get a book. And one way this feat can be accomplished is having a worldwide ‘FREE BOOK SATURDAY’ event.
The plan is quite simple, and the real beauty of ‘Free Book Saturday’ is that it won’t cost anyone a single penny. On a Saturday morning (and we can start tomorrow Saturday, March 21, 2015), simply gather up any books in which you’ve already read and maybe now is collecting dust on the shelf and place them on your front porch along with a handmade sign or a makeshift flag indicating “FREE BOOKS!”
Just by chance, your ‘free books’ could be the very books that brightens the life of a sad child who couldn’t get to the public library for various reasons. Let’s all pinch in and try to put a smile on a book lover’s face. Let’s make this a success and an ongoing worldwide global event – “FREE BOOK SATURDAY!” So, please pass the word and Share this post. Thanks, Randolph Randy Camp

Books: The Great Escape
When I was coming up in rural Spotsylvania County, Virginia, I was a somewhat quiet child, and as I got older I began to find my voice through writing. After learning to read, I remember being excited whenever I got a chance to go to the library, either to the school library or to the Rappahannock Regional Library in Fredericksburg.
To me, finding an interesting book to read was like eating a big piece of yellow cake with thick layers of chocolate frosting! Yep, you got it — I was certainly a book nerd…and I’m proud to say that I still am. It has always bothered me to walk into a house or an apartment and find no reading materials whatsoever laying around, especially if I know that school-age kids are living there. Without offending a few of my neighbors, I’ve donated a book or two to their household so that the children would have something to read.
Books have the ability to fly you away to some colorful, fantastic land when you live on a dismal urban street infested with gangs and drug dealers. If you live in the middle of nowhere, where the nearest neighbor is three miles away, books can fly you away to some exotic paradise and bring you back whenever you like. Yes indeed, books are amazing, and I hope that your personal library collection is expanding and expanding. – Randolph Randy Camp

Wavelengths
Everything we do has an impact or an influence on someone else, whether we like it or not. As I journey through life, I hope that my wavelengths create more of a positive ripple effect than a negative one. No, I’m certainly not perfect and I’ve made plenty of mistakes. Although I’m older now, I still fall way short of perfection but I try to give my best shot at helping and influencing others.
It’s the beginning of a new year now, and yesterday, as the kids went back to school after their long Holiday break, I was blown away by a ripple effect that was set in motion with wavelengths that started several months ago. It all began back in September when one of my neighbors had asked me to speak to her 16 year old daughter who was seriously considering dropping out of high school. Well, yesterday, this young lady knocked on my door and was so excited to tell me that not only was she getting A’s and B’s in all of her classes but she also had talked her mother into purchasing all of my books, in which she read all of them during the Holiday break. And with the biggest and proudest smile on her face, she went on to say that her teacher has also agreed to let her do an oral book report on one of my novels for extra credit. Needless to say, this young lady certainly made my day and I was just as proud of her as she was.
Yes indeed, our wavelengths definitely have an impact on others. I can only hope that during my lifetime I’ve helped more people than I’ve hurt. As I lay my head down at night, I want to sleep peacefully, knowing that my wavelengths had a positive ripple effect on someone. – Randolph Randy Camp

DROPPING OUT: SLAVERY WITHOUT CHAINS
After a long day yesterday one of my neighbors knocked on my door. She wanted to know if I could speak with her 16 year old daughter because her daughter was seriously considering dropping out of school. The moment my neighbor said the words ‘dropping out’ my ears automatically perched up and I quickly asked, “Where is she?”
Although initially I got the dramatic rolling of the eyes, the young lady gave me enough respect to listen to what I had to say. I told her that certain cultures and societies believe that females shouldn’t be allowed to read books, go to school and get a basic education. And I went on to tell her that this belief is backwards and a society that keeps its girls from reading books and getting an education is only hurting itself in the long run because that makes their whole society or country weak. “To me”, I continued,”keeping girls from reading books and going to school is a form of slavery, the kind of slavery where you don’t physically see the metal chains but they are definitely there, keeping you down and in place.” I further explained to her that we often take our public school system for granted when we should be grateful for it.
Today, as I’m thinking about this young lady and her very concerned mother, I wonder if she went to school this morning. I hope so. – Randolph Randy Camp

I Love Books!
Books are very special to me. I grew up very poor in rural Virginia during the late 60's and 70's. Books allowed me to escape my sometimes dismal surroundings when I was young. And as I got older, books allowed me to travel around the world without buying a plane ticket. I could go anywhere!
Today, I'm truly blessed to do something that I truly love, which is writing novels.
This photo was taken just outside the Buffalo Central Library. To me, having a public library card and actually utilizing the numerous services of your public library, is a great way to 'meet the world' , regardless of your family's income level. - Randolph Randy Camp

Book Talk: One Writer's Dream
During every ‘Meet the Author’ Book Talk I’ve been invited to thusfar, one of the questions that normally pops up is, “What do you like best about being a writer?” And my usual response is this, “I absolutely love being a writer because I get to ‘go places’ without buying a ticket, meaning that my stories can take me anywhere. Also, I get a kick out of speaking to students about creative writing whenever I’m invited to do a classroom book talk because one of my greatest goals as a writer is to inspire others with one of my stories or with something I said.” – Randy Camp

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
If you have a passion for anything you must go for it. If that passion is writing don’t let anyone or anything discourage you. Rejection letters go straight to the trash or turn it over and use the backside as scrap paper and continue writing! The rough draft (handwritten) for my second novel was partially written on the flipside of rejection letters I’d received from my first novel’s manuscript.

For Aspiring Writers
One of my goals as an author is to hopefully inspire others, especially young people. Whenever I give a Book Talk at a high school I always try to end the session with a few helpful writing tips, and one of my main pointers I make is telling the students to practice DESCRIBING mundane things and objects as they go through their daily routine. For example, as you walk pass the street poles and lamp posts in your neighborhood think about the different words or phrases in which you could use to describe one of them, especially the wooden ones. It’s somewhat easy to write a description of a car (red, dents, ect.), but I like to get the students to practice on more mundane things because you can surprise yourself sometimes by coming up with an unusual or unique word or phrase that’s rarely heard or seen in print. The use of these interesting-but-different adjectives will make your story stand out and give you your unique voice as a writer. To give you a hint in describing the mundane street pole, just take a closer look and see if there are any rusty nails or staples still protruding along the side or if there are any weathered pieces left from an old yard sale sign. And remember, to become an author you must write, write, and write! – R. Camp

Cammie's Grief: Excerpt from LaBrea's Moon
The door is partially open. The curtains are drawn. The room is dimly lit. A certain gloom...emptiness lingers in the room. LaBrea's suicide is taking a devastating toll on her mother. Everyday Cammie goes into LaBrea's bedroom and secretly releases her pain. Today we find Cammie sitting on the edge of LaBrea's bed. Tears streak down her cheeks as she gazes at the collection of movie posters covering the walls. Each poster has an enlarged image of the movie's lead actress surrounded by smaller images of the other cast. Deep in her heart, Cammie knew that one day she would see her daughter's face gracing some big blockbuster movie poster just like the ones ornamenting these walls. The death of that wishful thought, the loss of that hopeful dream is slowly killing Cammie, day by day. Cammie wipes the streaks of tears from her cheeks with the backside of the colorful apron wrapped around her hips. Suddenly, a kitchen timer echoes throughout the house! Cammie doesn't move a muscle. Momentarily, she seems to be caught up in the midst of a daydream.

Wet Matches: A Novel" is an inspiring and uplifting story about five homeless
'throwaway' teens (all HIV positive) getting a second chance at a better life
when a young couple on a high school reunion trip rescues them and takes them on
a cross-country journey to their new home in sunny California. 'Wet Matches' is
about friendships, and it asks the question, "How far would you go for a
friend?" Fifteen years of separation didn't stop Crystal from being there for
Jalan. What Crystal did for Jalan will inspire us all to take a closer look at
our own relationships and friendships...Could you still laugh knowing that death
was possibly lurking around the corner? Meet five free-spirited teens: Shelly,
Robbie, Josie, Micky and Cole, who will inspire you to enjoy every second of
your life. Shelly is pregnant. Robbie plays guitar. Josie's a little confused.
Micky likes cars. Cole's a little shy. Some people called them useless. They
were told to get out of town. Some people said that they were about as good as
wet matches...but Jalan, Crystal and Jack thought otherwise. If you had ever
been ridiculed, bullied, mocked...or if someone had ever made you feel like you
was good for nothing or worthless then Randolph Randy Camp's award-winning 'Wet
Matches: A Novel' is a story for you. Without being preachy-but
yet-entertaining, 'Wet Matches' takes a fresh contemporary look at America's
ever-increasing youth runaway and teen homeless problems. 'WET MATCHES' is a

Remembering My ' Walkabout '
It's the beginning of March 2014 and nearly 37 years ago I had an experience that I still think about today. When I think of those pivotal moments of my life, especially the life-changing events of my early years, my mind drifts back to my 'walkabout.' It was early Spring 1977. I was turning fifteen and doing quite well in the 10th grade at Spotsylvania High in rural Virginia. A strong urge of wanting to explore and escape came over me during this period of my life. I absolutely loved going to school and learning about different cultures in other parts of the world. I'd learned how the Australian Aborigines would send their juvenile boys to survive on their own in the wilderness as a passage into manhood. The Aborigines called this 'the walkabout.' After saving up enough money from doing odd jobs like picking up hay on local farms and weeding out flowerbeds, I boarded a Greyhound Bus and went on a journey to the city of Philadelphia. The juvenile court system classified my journey as "running away", but to me, it was my 'walkabout.' The journey itself, coupled with my experiences on the streets and a brief stay at the Philadelphia Youth Study Center, actually changed my life forever. After seeing and breathing the smell of old urine and dried up alcohol on Philadelphia's dirty sidewalks it made me truly appreciate the simple, natural beauty of little ol' Spotsylvania County in Virginia. It was at this time in my life that I began to recognize how important the Rappahannock River (in Virginia) was in my life and how it would help shape me as a person and a writer. My 'walkabout' to Philadelphia really opened my eyes to a lot of things. After returning back to Spotsylvania County, I had this renewed sense of "I gotta do something", so I started reaching out more, mostly through my stories and writings. I wrote to magazines, and my very first published article was a local newspaper piece entitled 'PUT SOMETHING BACK' for the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. Still, to this day, when people would ask me what do I consider the best thing I'd ever written, or what stories or books am I the most proud of as a writer, I always say the 'Put Something Back' newspaper article I'd wrote as a teenager. Periodically, when I meet a troubled young person who might be a little confused or feel a little misplaced, I would share with them my walkabout story, and hopefully, they too, will begin to recognize the simple, natural beauty (of both people and things) which already exists around them...(we just don't see it until we venture out.) So now, here it is the year 2014 and in many ways, sometimes I still feel like I'm on 'my walkabout'....still learning and growing. - Randolph Randy Camp, More at http://www.goodreads.com/randolphcamp

STORY CLIP From Thriller Novel '...Then The Rain'
Teaser from thriller '...THEN THE RAIN'
1999 was coming to an end and the world was changing. It was a time of uncertainty in America. A time when a great majority thought that every computerized machine and digital clock would abruptly freeze at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve and stop the world in its tracks. But not everyone was caught up in the Y2K frenzy. Tired of being a nobody in a somebody town, Viki Powers didn't give a damn about none of the new millennium crap. All Viki really cared about was for someone to listen to her songs.
Although I’d originally wrote ‘NEW K.A.N.S.A.S.’ as a live action feature, it could also work as an ANIMATED feature-length movie as well. (The ‘Kansas’ in NEW K.A.N.S.A.S. stands for Kids’ Alliance National Society And Sanctuary)
